Microsoft expecting PS4 to come down in price soon

Ars Technica/Aurich Lawson

Ever since Sony announced last week that it is finally dropping the Japanese price of the PS4 by 5,000 (about $42), there's been rampant speculation about whether or not a similar reduction is in the works for the rest of the world. While we looked at the context and suggested a wider price drop might not be in the cards yet, Sony's biggest console competition seems to think otherwise.

"I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price," Microsoft Head of Xbox Phil Spencer told IGN recently. "When I think about the playbook they've used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

It might not seem in Microsoft's interest to predict a PS4 price drop, since such a move would likely improve Sony's growing lead in worldwide sales. Then again, a PS4 price drop would probably mean that Sony isn't satisfied with how many systems it's selling at its current (and launch) price of $400 (or 399/roughly 300 in Europe), indicating that the company is feeling a bit more pressure in the sales race.
